We are just putting things away, and starting to relax after a wonderful "Dive Against Debris" event - again! We were so happy to see so many of you, some we haven't seen all winter (hibernating scuba divers, hahaha), and it is somewhat of a reunion with long-time divers, and also an opportunity to connect with new divers. Bringing the experienced, "salty" divers together with new ones just getting started in the sport is a great way to help everyone. All divers have stories, and learning experiences to share, and everyone is happy to find new potential dive buddies to play with under the waves! As divers, we are so conscious of the health of our waters, whether they be fresh, or salt. We know that a healthy ocean is imperative to the health and success of our communities on land, so we rally passionately around these issues. That is why our "Dive Against Debris" scuba kick-off day every spring is a favourite fun event for us. We definitely wonder if we should consider more "Dive Against Debris" events in other locations (Kingston, Tobermory...Cozumel?), and keep making our small, positive changes to this amazing underwater world that we love so much; one diver at time. Today, divers pulled 50-60 pounds of trash from the lake, including some fishing lures, numerous beer bottles, pop cans, and metal roofing slats! What? Apparently some people think, "Out of sight, out of mind"! To ALL the divers (AND their supportive loved ones) who came out today for some diving, trash collecting, BBQ, and fun - THANK-YOU! Also a special thank-you to Barb, a sweet, nurturing soul (and awesome diver), who manned the BBQ and made sure everyone got fed! xo Thank-you Sam and Ryan, for collecting the trash as it came in from the lake, documenting all the pieces, and helping me prepare the report for Project Aware. Awesome! xo Project Aware collects this data from divers who dive against debris all over the world! You can learn more about them at: http://www.projectaware.org/
