What is The Difference Between Divemaster & Master Scuba Diver? (Because We Are All Confused)5/3/2016 I get asked this at least once a week, and to be fair it is a valid question. I remember I was also once confused. The titles sound pretty much the same and are comprised of the same words. So you’re sitting there wondering…What is the difference between the two? Which one is higher in the diving world and why does it all have to be so complicated? In the diving world, there is actually a significant and distinct difference between the two. So if you feel too silly to ask someone, I’ve got you covered. First, let’s start with Master Scuba Diver. A common misconception is that there is a specific course to become a Master Scuba Diver, however it is actually not a course in itself. It is a set of requirements that need to be met before one can apply in order to get the special Master Scuba Diver status. The requirements as per PADI are:
So once you meet the requirements and apply, you are essentially a Master Scuba Diver! Not as hard as you thought, right? There are so many awesome specialty courses that PADI offers, from Underwater Videographer to Ice Diving, all the way to Fish Identification (yup, that’s right, naming fish). Now, becoming a Divemaster is a bit different. It is essentially an entry-level professional certification. During your PADI Open Water, you may have noticed divers helping out you and your instructor – They were Divemasters! A Divemaster leads dives and assists dive instructors and they are a respected and important part of any dive shop or diving team. The requirements as per PADI are:
The Divemaster course is not an easy course to pass, one must meet a long list of requirements and the course itself takes a significant length of time to finish with multiple components. Once you are a Divemaster, you can pursue a career in the dive industry and work just about anywhere in the world. The Divemaster course is a stepping stone to moving up in the professional diving world as you can then apply for the PADI Open Water Instructor Course! So there you have it folks, now you know the difference between the two similar sounding PADI diving qualifications! Remember to thank your hard working Divemasters who often volunteer their time purely for the love of the sport! Go Divemasters, we love you! Now that you know the difference, you are well on your way to choosing the next adventure that suits you best! Happy Diving, Dana Lenahan

Twas the night before Christmas, at Adventure Sports dot ca,
And a crowd was there growing, that would not go away. The divers were waiting with long written lists, Of gear they desired held tight in their fists. Santa was coming, you see, with his sleigh, The divers had gathered and waited all day. Jody tried to convince them, it would do them no good; “Just buy it from me,” he said, “like a good diver should”. When Santa arrived, he was mobbed in a second, “I’m going to get killed!” Was all that he reckoned. The divers waved lists for the old elf to see, And called out to Santa, “Don’t forget about me!” We want steel tanks, and octos, and Advanced Scuba Courses, Cameras with housings and multiple air sources! “Stop!” Santa shouted, he’d had quite enough, My workshop makes toys, but not any of that stuff! “We all can be happy, if you teach me to scuba, My sleigh on the roof waits to fly us to Cuba.” The pitter-patter of the divers’ hurrying feet, Could be heard on the roof without missing a beat. Aleksandar drove the sleigh, while Santa studied the book, Jody proctored the exam; that was all that it took. The sleigh grew pontoons when they finally arrived, They all were excited, a place not yet dived. And without even a speedo (he’d forgotten to take it), Santa doffed all his clothing, to go diving naked. The divers were troubled and averted their gaze, That white, pasty vision would now haunt all their days. A wonderful dive was enjoyed by them all, And they came back exhausted, but pleased by the wall. They saw turtles and sharks and the goliath-est grouper, Lobsters, and stingrays, and a porpuffian-pooper. Rob poured the bourbon for all that were finished, The divers came up as their air was diminished. They rested and laughed as they recalled all the fun, While Santa drove back with the rising of the sun. Returning to Adventure Sports Newmarket, to buy himself gear, Santa packed up the sleigh, and shook hands with my Dear. But the old elf could be heard laughing, as he drove out of here, “What a crazy bunch of divers, and a hell of a year!” LOL, ok I won't quit my day job, but it was fun to write, and it was written with a spirit of playfulness, thankfulness, and a desire to share and wish all of you a happy and safe Christmas! From our home to yours, MERRY CHRISTMAS! :) Jill Smith |
